Cultural Work Life

Studying various aspects of cultural working life has been central to the cultural research environment at Telemarksforsking for nearly 30 years. Through a long series of projects, we have conducted cultural sociological, economic, and political analyses of the working conditions of artists and other professional groups in the cultural sector.

Artists’ Incomes and Careers

Telemarksforsking has conducted three nationwide quantitative surveys of artists’ income and working conditions commissioned by national authorities, The Artist Survey 2006, The Artist Survey 2013 and The Artist Survey 2019. As part of the last survey, a report was also written about artists’ income and work situation during the corona pandemic. The surveys cover a broad spectrum of artists within the areas of performing arts, music, literature, visual art and design.

The purpose of the surveys has been to provide a knowledge base for the design of Norwegian cultural and artist policy. The surveys have also been the starting point for several scientific articles. The doctoral dissertation Artists in Norway. Inequality in Work, Income and Attitudes is based on data from the first two artist surveys.

In addition, we have conducted a number of qualitative studies of artists’ working life, which among other things concern power structures in the art field, recruitment to the artist professions and artists’ career paths. In 2021, the book Stories about Artist Life was published, about Norwegian artists’ lives and careers, based on interviews conducted with around 20 artists at 20-year intervals.

Creative Industry

Artists are a central part of the creative industry, but the industry also includes other sectors, such as advertising, architecture, fashion, computer technology, TV, radio, etc. Telemarksforsking has studied various aspects of working in the creative industry, among other things in the three-year research and development project Mentoring, Networks and Co-location. In 2022, a doctoral dissertation based on data from this project was published

Cultural working life is also a theme in a number of other projects, for example in projects about art and culture for children and young people, performing arts, as well as international and Norwegian cultural policy.

Å studere ulike sider ved kulturarbeidslivet har stått sentralt i kulturforskningsmiljøet ved Telemarksforsking i snart 30 år. Gjennom en lang rekke prosjekter har vi gjort kultursosiologiske, -økonomiske og -politiske analyser av arbeidsforholdene til kunstnere og andre yrkesgrupper i kultursektoren.

Kunstneres inntekter og karrierer

Telemarksforsking har gjennomført tre landsomfattende kvantitative undersøkelser av kunstneres inntekts- og arbeidsforhold på oppdrag fra nasjonale myndigheter, Kunstnerundersøkelsen 2006, Kunstnerundersøkelsen 2013 og Kunstnerundersøkelsen 2019. Som del av den siste undersøkelsen ble det også skrevet en rapport om kunstnernes inntekts- og arbeidssituasjon under korona-pandemien. Undersøkelsene omfatter et bredt spekter av kunstnere innenfor områdene scenekunst, musikk, litteratur, visuell kunst og design.

Formålet med undersøkelsene har vært å gi kunnskapsgrunnlag for utformingen av norsk kultur- og kunstnerpolitikk. Undersøkelsene har også vært utgangspunkt for flere vitenskapelige artikler. Doktoravhandlingen Kunstnere i Norge. Ulikhet i arbeid, inntekt og holdninger er basert på dataene fra de to første kunstnerundersøkelsene.

I tillegg har vi gjennomført en rekke kvalitative studier av kunstneres arbeidsliv, som blant annet omhandler maktstrukturer på kunstfeltet, rekruttering til kunstneryrkene og kunstneres karrierebaner. I 2021 kom boka Fortellinger om kunstnerliv, om norske kunstneres liv og karrierer, basert på intervjuer som er gjort med rundt 20 kunstnere med 20 års mellomrom.

Kreativ næring

Kunstnerne er en sentral del av den kreative næringen, men næringen omfatter også andre bransjer, som reklame, arkitektur, mote, datateknologi, TV, radio mm. Telemarksforsking har studert ulike sider ved å arbeide i kreativ næring, blant annet i det treårige forsknings- og utviklingsprosjektet Mentoring, nettverk og samlokalisering. I 2022 kom en doktoravhandling basert på dataene fra dette prosjektet

Kulturarbeidetlivet er også tema i en rekke andre prosjekter, for eksempel i prosjekter om kunst og kultur for barn og unge, scenekunst, samt internasjonal og norsk kulturpolitikk.
