Panel discussing the following questions regarding cultures role in preparedness:

  • Whilst the relation between culture and conflict /war is not new, how does the current geopolitical situation influence current conceptions of this relationship?
  • Since defence and foreign policy are inherently tied to the concept of the nation, linking the cultural sector to these societal institutions inevitably raises questions about different forms of nationalism. How does nationalism emerge in today’s discourse? Can or should it be avoided?
  • And how can arts and culture contribute constructively to peacebuilding in these turbulent times without reinforcing nationalist tendencies? Is it possible to balance national defence with an inclusive and diverse cultural policy in turbulent times?

Panel participants:

Paul Sverre Siljan Tharaldsen (The Department for Protocol, Cultural Promotion, and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

Hege Knarvik Sande (Performing Arts Hub Norway (PAHN) / Norwegian Arts Abroad.

Cindy Horst (The Centre on Culture, Conflict and Co-existence at Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO)

Ola K. Berge (Telemark Research Institute)
