Abstract

Egalitarianism, conformism, and universalism are traits that have frequently been used to characterize Norwegian politics. In this chapter, we explore the relationship between these traits and their connections with specific notions of representation and citizenship. We argue that the political dynamic resulting from these traits is key to understanding the development of the Norwegian welfare state, particularly during its most expansive phase in the second half of the twentieth century.
