Our understanding of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) is highly
influenced by field theoretic studies of artists and their occupational
practices. In the paper, we argue that field theory seems to be an
insufficient approach if we want to understand the multi-faceted sphere
of CCIs and take into account that these industries unfolds within a
specter of justification regimes. The paper sheds light on an often
forgotten professional in the Norwegian CCIs; the regional
intermediators. These professional individuals act as translators and
connecters between different mind-sets and justifications, based on a
multi-contextual competence. The analysis is based on qualitative data
from interviews and participant observation in an ongoing multi-case
study on regional CCIs in a Norwegian context, and the data is analyzed
by pragmatic sociology and repertoire theory.
