The paper identifies and analyzes nodal points of the contemporary Norwegian music export discourse.
Such points, significant in shaping and constituting how we see and assess music export, are identified in a recent key debate in media.
Two points are suggested: Profit, deriving from an economy rationale that is central to the discursive field of music export, is highly ambiguous as it does not refer to any stable conception or definition. Thus it is used argumentatively by all debaters, negotiating in what way music export should be supported and organized. Much the same, competence is individually estimated and argued, as it correlates with what values the agents represent.
The paper concludes that in a cultural policy perspective, clusters of competence, recognizing different profit profiles and a diverse range of expressions, should be stimulated, as artworld and economy logics plays equally important and inseparable roles constituting music export.
